Did you know that drinking sugary drinks like soda can age your body on a cellular level as quickly as cigarettes.
A study from UC San Francisco researchers revealed that telomeres, the protective units of DNA that cap the end of chromosomes in cells (like the plastic ends on a shoelace) were shorter in a survey of participants who drank more soda.
The longer your “shoelace” is the better the cell function and the healthier you are… But if your “shoelace” becomes unraveled and frayed this can lead to cellular malfunction or cell death.
Learn all about Telomeres here.
Chronic inflammation and oxidation are two of the most common reasons you can wear down the tip of your telomeres and make it more vulnerable to the elements.
And you guessed it…. over consumption of sugar and processed carbs causes not only obesity and metabolic damage but also chronic widespread inflammation.
“Regular consumption of sugar-sweetened sodas might influence disease development, not only by straining the body’s metabolic control of sugars, but also through accelerated cellular aging of tissues.”

THE GOOD NEWS IS,
We can protect and even lengthen our telomeres by what we eat.
Like:
- Veggies high in antioxidants and vitamins: spinach, avocado, Kale, broccoli, collard greens, sweet potatoes… just to name a few.
- Eating whole real foods.
- Whole eggs from pasture raised chickens.
- 100% grass fed, finished beef.
- Wild caught salmon.
I can go on and on with this list… The bottom line is eat real, whole, colorful, good sourced food.
